Historic cocktail bar in Belfast

The Crown Liquor Saloon, a cocktail bar in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a historic pub that is considered one of the most famous and beautiful of its kind in the United Kingdom. Originally opened in 1826 as "The Railway Tavern" by Felix O'Hanlon, it was later taken over by Michael Flanagan. His son, Patrick Flanagan, extensively renovated the pub in 1885 and renamed it "The Crown Liquor Saloon". This renovation gave the pub its distinctive Victorian character, making it an outstanding example of a "Gin Palace" – a luxurious drinking establishment that flourished in the industrial cities of the British Empire in the 19th century. Today, the bar is owned by the National Trust and operated by Mitchells & Butlers as part of the Nicholson's pub chain, while still maintaining its historical charm.

Victorian pubs in the United Kingdom

The most striking feature of The Crown is its opulent interior, which can be traced back to Italian craftsmen who originally came to Belfast to work on churches. Patrick Flanagan convinced them to work on the pub after hours, resulting in a stunning combination of colorful tile mosaics, intricate wood carvings, and painted and etched glass. The facade is decorated with polychromatic tiles, and the entrance welcomes visitors with a mosaic in the shape of a crown. Inside, the long bar impresses with its red granite altar-style top, heated footrests, and gas lamps hanging from the intricately decorated ceiling. Particularly characteristic are the ten private "snugs" – small, enclosed booths with doors that were intended for more reserved guests during the Victorian era. These snugs feature original details such as bell systems for service and metal plates for striking matches.

Best cocktails to enjoy in Belfast

The drink selection is diverse, including a wide range of cocktails covering both classic recipes and modern variations. The bar takes pride in its extensive collection of real ales representing a long British brewing tradition, as well as a selection of premium gins often served with special tonics. A well-poured Guinness is considered essential and is appreciated by many guests as a perfect complement to the ambiance. The wine list also offers a solid selection, and for non-alcoholics, there is freshly brewed coffee or traditional tea. The menu is complemented by seasonal specials to provide variety.

Authentic pub food in Belfast

Culinarily, The Crown focuses on classic pub fare with an emphasis on British tradition. Popular dishes include Fish and Chips, served with crispy batter-fried fish, and hearty pies such as Steak and Ale Pie, which impresses with a rich gravy. The Sunday Roast is another highlight, featuring slow-cooked meat, Yorkshire pudding, and seasonal vegetables, particularly popular on weekends. For lighter meals, there are sandwiches or sharing platters, perfect for enjoying with a drink. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, as well as a children's menu, making the bar family-friendly. Meals are prepared from fresh ingredients with a focus on quality and simplicity.

Crown Liquor Saloon tourist attraction

The atmosphere at The Crown Liquor Saloon is unique: during the day, it offers a relaxed environment, ideal for lunch or a drink, while in the evening, it comes alive with live music and a lively crowd. The bar is a popular meeting place for tourists looking to enjoy the Victorian flair, as well as locals who appreciate the history and coziness. The staff is often praised for their friendliness and efficiency, and the option to order via an app adds convenience. The bar has also served as a filming location for movies such as "Odd Man Out" and "Divorcing Jack", earning the status of a Grade-A-Listed Building, highlighting its cultural significance.

Had Friday night dinner for 2. A lovely space upstairs for a quiet but social meal. The oysters were outstanding. Really enjoyed the Irish Stew and Irish Coffee.

What a historical location! The place has barely changed in 300 years. I could only see one gas lamp, the others all appeared to be electric. I loved that they still had the old booths that almost all pubs have got rid of now. Great selection of drinks too.

First time here in Belfast and came here for my partner’s 40th birthday. Absolutely amazing vibes and delicious vegetarian and vegan friendly food. Our server, Rhiannon, was a lovely and all around delightful gal!

An authentic Pub in the city centre. Lovely booths and original features. Super smooth Guiness. Who knew National Trust had a pub!

We visited here on the recommendation of others. To say we’re disappointed is an understatement. The pub is lovely and full of character, however, the food was absolutely crap. Flavourless slop. I had prawn tempura, it was very clearly some reformed prawns, arrow straight and minuscule in girth, the batter at a factor of 2:1. Most disappointing was the steak and ale pie, devoid of taste or flavour. The staff were excellent and not at fault whatsoever. So sad what these chains do to respected establishments.

A beautiful bar with pretty much any drink you'd like. Restored to its original Nineteenth century grandeur. Excellent, helpful staff offer swift service. It's very busy on the weekend. If you can get a group into a booth, it's great. You can close the door and chat. Toilets are spotless. No more expensive than anywhere else nearby.
